So you want to be an emergency medical technician? People’s lives often depend on the quick reaction and competent care of EMTs. Incidents as varied as automobile accidents, heart attacks, drownings, childbirth, and gunshot wounds all require immediate medical attention. Although stressful at times, these incidents all have one feature in common: the potential to make a difference in someone’s life. As an EMT, you will soon find that there is nothing better in life than being able to say that you saved someone’s life when asked about your day. General Statement of JobAs an emergency medical technician, you will provide direct patient care to sick and injured patients in all age groups, neonates through geriatrics. As a basic life support provider, you must utilize aspects of the primary and secondary survey to manage a developmentally appropriate plan of care for each patient, evaluate the patient’s response, and coordinate care effectively. You will be expected to perform complex immobilization procedures, restrain patients, and drive and staff ambulances. You will be responsible for performing in accordance with established emergency medical procedures in the assessment and treatment of your patients and will be permitted to administer acetaminophen, activated charcoal, aspirin, ibuprofen, nasal spray, and nitroglycerin.
